Clan Doubts and the Succession Process

Leaders of the Babiito royal clan dispute that claim. Charles Kayondo Kamurasi, the Omusuuga, told The Daily Monitor the clan has no knowledge of a biological child and questioned the prime minister's authority to announce an heir. A 21-member committee of clan elders has been formed to evaluate successor claims and to follow traditional steps to identify the next king from existing princes.

Oyo's Reign and Legacy

Oyo became king at age 3 after his father Olimi Tooro died on Aug. 26, 1995; his crowning took place on April 17, 2010, the day after his 18th birthday. No cause of death was included in the announcement; a government minister had earlier said he was critically ill and seeking treatment in the U.S. During his reign he championed youth empowerment, education, climate conservation, health advocacy and HIV/AIDS awareness and launched the Tooro Kingdom Vision 2045.
