Spade praised former cast mate Adam Sandler for his comedy, admitting he would tell Sandler, "That was funny, I’m so jealous," as a way of acknowledging good work and pushing himself to improve. "SNL was more about upping my own game," he added.

Generational surprise

He also expressed surprise at how current cast members interact with creator Lorne Michaels. Spade said Sarah Sherman, who joined in 2021, told him she texted Michaels to ask why a sketch was cut, prompting his reaction: "You text Lorne?" Both Spade and Carvey are SNL alums—Spade from 1990 to 1996 and Carvey from 1986 to 1993.
