The July 25 incident at Seabright State Beach began when Nathaniel struggled in powerful surf. Williams ran into the water, secured the boy and refused to let go as more waves struck. His partner, Aaron Bohnen, entered to assist and together they brought Nathaniel to shore, used a medical kit and treated him. Williams later returned to duty and made other rescues that same day.
Williams said he relied on training and aimed to get the boy out as quickly as possible; he hopes to become a paramedic and firefighter. Nathaniel told CBS Mornings he feared he might die, and his father Sumit said the child had been unconscious and not breathing before the rescue. Sumit credited Ryder's resilience, saying had Williams let go Nathaniel could have drowned.
